Your sense of smell can awaken long lost memories, especially when you’re remembering a name or a face of someone. Many people today wear their favorite fragrances which will become their signature fragrance.
Perfumes tend to be more related to women, however men also use fragrances and perfumes as part of their fashion. Up till now, in order to give it a more masculine name, men prefer to call it as cologne rather than perfume. Cologne is otherwise known as Eau de Toilette or EDT.
Many colognes in the market today have refreshing and clean scent but there are other scents such as sporty, spicy and sensual. They are used not only for men to smell good, or to attract women but also to mask out the natural body odor.
Manufacturers keep producing newer colognes almost every day. However, the nine most common fragrances that they usually combine to make another variety of the cologne are:
- Herbal
- Citrus
- Leather
- Woody
- Floral
- Musk
- Spice
- Fruity
- Powdery
Many of today colognes are composed of three active components: the top or head notes, middle or heart notes and base notes.
The primary fragrance you are going to smell is the top note which may be fresh and spicy smelling but it is extremely volatile and deplete quickly. The next thing you are going to smell is the middle note which is usually composed of a heavier and stronger element like citrus and spicy scents. It usually stays for an hour before it disappears and finally the base notes are the ones that remain. They are composed of a more complete element and are generally stronger. Lastly, base notes lasts longer than the top and middle notes.
As for top note, the scent of citrus is fresher, more sharp and confident. You may relate it with oranges, grapefruits, lemons and bergamot. Woody fragrances include the cedar, sandalwood and patchouli while leather can be achieved by mixing wood, honey, wood tars and tobacco either as a middle or base note.
The substances mentioned above are combined in various ways and with different formulations help create a new product that hold an entirely unique fragrance.
If you are going to choose specific cologne, you need to know that each of the fragrances will react differently to your skin and will smell a little different between each person depending on their body odor. People with sensitive skin and sensitive smell must proceed with caution in choosing the best cologne to prevent any reaction.
The process use to produce men’s cologne is somewhat complex. It is achieved by combining a portion of alcohol and perfume oil in a diluted form so that their fragrance would last longer. The base notes could be flora like orchid, lavender and jasmine.
Colognes in the market may be expensive because you are paying mostly for the process of creating, developing, producing and marketing the products. Not everybody can afford them and this is the main reason why there are shops that offer discounts or perhaps create other cheaper versions as alternatives. This is mostly done to give budget conscious individuals.
Example of famous colognes for men include – Fendi, Giorgio Armani’s Cologne, Hugo Boss for men and Creed, just to name a few. These colognes not only make you smell fresh but may also attract women you like.
