Wind energy continues to exceed expectations despite the global recession. That is the message from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) as it reveals the annual result in 2009.

The market for wind energy in Europe increase by 20% in 2009 and it is also showing that for the first time ever more than 10 GW of wind power capacity in the European Union. If we add the other renewable energy, 61% of all new capacity came from renewable technology. There is big shift from yesterday technology like coal and nuclear to renewable energy.

In fact, 39% of all electricity generating capacity installed in 2009 was wind powered followed by gas. That means more wind power turbine were install in Europe last year than any other electricity source.

It is the second year in a row that wind power have top the ranking. According to European Wind Energy Association, the 2009 result show a slow decline use of coal and nuclear.

Although, Germany and Spain remain top of the class with wind energy. There are more countries now significantly investing more in wind power. Italy, UK and France are the other three countries that are falling closely behind Germany and Spain when it comes to wind power. Now there is no broader range of countries investing in wind energy.

The European Wind Energy Association thinks that the results in 2009 are remarkable because of their ongoing economic crisis. The challenge now for the wind energy sector is to maintain this growth throughout 2010 and so on.
