name-cheap

Whenever I have an idea for a domain name, my first instinct is to go on a website like namecheap.com and check if that domain name I have in mind is taken or not.

Now I understand if a domain name is still available for anyone to register it can be stolen before you have a chance to register yourself.

For example, just a few weeks ago I had an idea for a web hosting review website. The domain name I had in mind was epicwebhost.com, I like it because it was short, easy to remember and catchy. It was a perfect domain name for my web hosting review website, so I decided to check to see if this domain name is available over at namecheap.com.

I went to namecheap.com to type in the domain name and notice that it was still available, but I did not register it that day because I want to think about it.

About two days later, I decided to go register the domain name epicwebhost.com and guess what? Someone already register the domain name, I thought I was going crazy. I thought I must had made some mistake 2 days before when I was searching for the domain name epicwebhost.com and somehow I mistaken it to be available.

Then I open up my browser to look at epicwebhost.com and look up the whois information on the domain name. I found that the domain name was register on January 29 2010, the day I was searching that domain name and it was available on January 28 2010. Someone knew about my domain name and registered it the next day after I search on namecheap.com; this cannot be some kind of coincidence. Someone know exactly what domain names people are searching on namecheap.com

I have an account; I keep all my domain names at namecheap.com and find that their website is secure. I never had any problem with their account, except for this domain name-stealing problem.

Also, 2 years ago I also got another domain name stolen from me before I register it myself. That domain name was linksciti.com and it happened the same way when I lost epicwebhost.com

From now on, I would never use namecheap.com to do any domain name search. I would only use a site like bustaname.com, which does not steal your domain name and when I have find a domain that I like, I’ll go to namecheap.com to register that domain name.
