How to cancel and get out of gas and electricity contract
If you’re a home owner, especially if you’re a new home owner, watch out for these door-to-door 3rd party gas and electricity sales. They will dress up with their uniform, cap and clipboard. Knocking on your door unannounced, making sale pitch about their cheapest gas and electricity prices or their “Price Protection Plan”. With promise savings on gas and electricity, or telling you to sign up before the cost of gas and electricity are going up.
They are not there to save anyone money. No strangers knock on your door to save you money, they are doing it because they want your money.
First, if you or your parents are 55 years or older and sign their gas and electricity contract. You can cancel without paying any existing fee, these 3rd party gas and electricity providers will not tell you this. Also, you have between 10-30 days to cancel without having to pay anything after the day you sign the contract. The cancellation period (10-30 days) varies from one company to another, if you want to get out you will need to act quick. If you are under 55 years old and pass the 10-30 days of signing the contract and want to get out without paying anything. Read the different options below.
Option #1: For US residents

If you live Illinois file your complaint to the ICC and call The Attorney General of Illinois at (800) 386-5438 or visit The Attorney General of Illinois’s website to file a complaint on consumer fraud.
If you live in the Buffalo/New York area contact Attorney General’s Buffalo office at (800) 771-7755
For Texas residents call The Attorney General of Texas consumer protection hot-line at (800) 621-0508.

Then file a complaint at The Better Business Bureau.
Option #2: For Canadians, Send letter to Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services
If you just sign the gas and electricity contract, you have 10 days to cancel without paying anything.
