I thought this stuff was ban in Ontario since 2005, but apparently not. Here is a recent article about this practice written by The Globe and Mail: Does that cheque from the energy company seem too good to be true?

The only reason for signing with an ESCO is to save money. Anything (signed a check?) that resulted in you being committed to a multi-year +$.41 per kWh sounds like slammin,crammin and violations of the PSC's rules that allow ESCO's to sell power. FILE A COMPLAINT, They should lose their status as an approved ESCO if NY State cares about their consumers.

I just cancelled my contract for Just Energy. I know the cancellation fee was high $245. for 34 months early cancel but I will still get it back in savings in less than six months. Was paying 41cents instead of recently 15 cents by our hydro supplier. I sent post dated checks. I am relieved just by opting out of the contract. I was taken in by cashing a $32.50 check two years ago. No more contracts for this person.
