Exit fees after new legislation

I signed a energy contract two years ago. I would like to cancel. Do I pay the cancellation fee / exit fee that was originally agreed to or do I pay the new fee rate as set out under the new legislation that came into effect Jan 1, 2011?

  1. On January 1, 2011 the New Energy Consumer Protection Act came into force and it is for all gas and electricity contracts in Ontario after January 1, 2011.

If you sign a contract before that time, you are stuck with whatever cancellation fee stated in your contract.

The New Energy Consumer Protection Act, says all cancellation fee in Ontario by an alternative gas and electricity supplier is now drop to $50 per year remaining for electricity and $100 per year for the remaining of natural gas. That’s the cancellation fee after Jan 1, 2011.

More basic info of the New Energy Consumer Protection Act and more detail by the Ontario Energy Board.
