We turn on the tap and expect clean water to run instantly. However, according to the UN more than half of the world will be living with shortage of fresh water within the next 50 years and considering each Americans uses and consume about 500,000 gallon of water last year. It is clear that every one of us need to make a major change.
One of the changes is to recycle water through a new technology instead of disposing water into our river and ocean.
At the Orange County District in southern California, the water goes into a three-step process. First, it goes through a hollow fiber membrane, and then it goes through a process known as reverse osmosis and finally advance oxidation using ultra violet light.
It sounds complicated but the process is easy to understand, the result is pure water. From the water plant, the water is pump into seawater barrier to help refill the underground water supply. This entire process consumes less energy than importing water from other parts of the country.
Although, this new technology make conservation easier than ever before, and it is only one part of a bigger solution. Experts urge Americans to do their part. That includes taking shorter showers, checking faucet for leaks and less watering the lawn.
